18 years after the death of Marco Lusini, Laura D’Asta left Italy, following in his footsteps to pursue her career as an artist. Lusini had been central to her younger life but someone she knew little about. His work nowhere to be seen, his friends dead.
In 2013 Laura returned to Siena to uncover Lusini’s life and legacy. His friends were not dead; his archive was in a mysterious lockup. She’s spent the past five years trying to trace the successful, world-travelling ‘magical realist’ painter who had shaped her childhood and then disappeared.
We follow Laura, meeting strangers in far-flung places, accessing the lockup, assembling Lusini’s retrospective. His bright, emotional work illuminates the journey. She will learn about herself, and about this path, which so many artists must travel.
